Bangladesh Navy: A Growing Tri-Dimensional Naval Force Will Rule The Bay of Bengal In The Coming Decades

Bangladesh Navy (BN), the naval arm of the country’s armed forces, observing most vigorous odernization processing ever. Government of Bangladesh sought to secure its 118513 sq kilometers of the maritime boundary which thought to be full of maritime resources. In addition, through the Bay of Bengal, country’s main & only maritime trade corridors goes. Bangladesh Navy is subjected to protect the Sea-Lines-Of-Communication (SLOC), hydrocarbon exploration projects, marine fisheries and to stop illegal migration, drug smuggling, piracy and so on. 

Bay of Bengal secured its great importance in the growing geopolitical position in the global influential matters. It has also possess a great position of domination in the region. Bangladesh has dwindling small economy with vast population in the world. Though all short comings Govt. wants to establish a full fledged three-dimensional naval force to ensure all required security of its SLOCs and the ultimate security of the country itself. Hence, recently, Dhaka modernizing the navy with greater invest in new and second hand equipment. earlier this year Bangladesh Navy commissioned two refurbished Chinese Ming-class attack submarines and entered into new era of tri-dimensional navy.

In 2011, BN started with its naval aviation wing by inducting two new AgustaWestland AW109E Power utility helicopters and two German RUAG Dornier Do-228NG maritime patrol aircrafts. They also bought four Chinese PLAN Type 056 Corvettes and more will be built in home. Speculation suggests that Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd. preparing to built 4000+ ton displacment heavy frigate with enough anti-air warfare armaments. Experts says that BN has a plan of acquiring 12–14 such high performance frigates in the next decade. Many minor surface ships like Large Patrol Crafts (LPC), Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and other small sized warships has been built in Khulna Shipyard and more are on pipeline. Within 2030 Bangladesh Navy will be the second largest navy in South Asia and one of the large in Asia. Bangladesh’s plan for a formidable navy will meet its peak then. Other military modernization processes are also being materialized for the army and the air force too.
