Western Marine Shipyard Ltd., A Bangladeshi Shipbuilder Will Build 2 LCT For Bangladesh Army

DGDP, Bangladesh ordered two LCT for Army. These contract was awarded to Western Marine Shipyard Ltd. LCTs are the vessels carry and land main battle tanks, APCs, IFVs, ACVs and many military vehicles. Bangladesh Army’s LCTs can be able to carry 200 soldiers along with 40 officers, while it’s main role of carrying MBTs are 8 in number.

A deal was signed between managing director of WMS and Deputy Director Purchase (Army Wing-1) Col. Chowdhury Fazle Ali. Total program costs around 770 million BDT.

These Landing Craft Tanks are 64 meter in length. Can operate in the stormy shores of Bangladesh and riverine regions too. These vessels will boost Bangladesh Army’s combat operational capabilities into a new height. In future more LCTs will be built in home. Previously such two LCT was built by the Naraynganj Dry Dock Limited for the Bangladesh Navy.

Bangaldesh pushed for an indigenous naval shipbuilding industry. Previously Khulna Shipyard was the sole builder of navy warships, and then NDDL came forward. Now, the good news is that this trend of manufacturing warships comes to the privately owned shipyards of Bangladesh. It will help the country’s economy and reduce reliance on foreign manufacturers.

It is worth to mention that China solely helped Bangladesh to start the modernization of warship building facilities of Bangladeshi shipyards. And they also providing warship designing assistance to us. In future Chittagong Dry Dock Limited goinf to build High Performance heavy frigates in Bangladesh which design and technical assistances will be provided by the Chinese warship builder CSIC.

In the last, but not in least, I want to mention here that Bangladesh Army increasing their tactical military cargo transport capabilities by acquiring new and advanced transport platforms. BA going to receive its biggest military transport aircraft C295W which is now in under trial flights in Spain. Army seeking a parallel transport capabilities in air, land and water.
